Cost-share Assistance Program Offered for Prescribed Burning
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

_______________________________________________________

The Alabama Forestry Commission is announcing a cost-share assistance program for non-industrial private forest landowners. The program is designed to promote stewardship of Alabama’s natural resources by encouraging landowners to begin a prescribed burning program on their forest lands. AFC will provide assistance to non-industrial private forest landowners for fire lanes and prescribed burning to reduce heavy fuel build-up areas, to improve wildlife habitat, and to restore native species to Alabama’s unique ecosystems of the State. A high risk for devastating fires and control hazards exists as a result of downed trees, salvage activities, and a trend of landowners’ reluctance to burn.

This program is funded through a federal grant, the Forest Land Enhancement Program, as authorized in the 2002 Farm Bill and issued by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Region 8.
The sign-up period for the Alabama Forestry Commission Prescribed Burning Program is June 14 – July 14, 2006 at local Forestry Commission offices.

Contact your local AFC office or call the Landowner Assistance State Coordinator, Arthur Hitt, at 334-240-9323 for more information.
