Alabama Forestry Commission's Forest Management Sheets (index)
  Information sheets on various aspects of the life of a forest that a landowner may need to understand the management of their lands. They generally describe various stages of the growth of a forest stand from: the selection of a tree species, site preparation, planting, growing the trees over time, thinning, pest management problems that might occur, wildlife considerations, and harvesting.

Alabama Forestry and Related Laws - The Code of Alabama 1975
  This publication, issued in January 2001 by the Alabama Forestry Commission, contains select provisions from the Code of Alabama, 1975, as amended by the Alabama Legislature. It is current through the 2000 Legislative Regular Session.

AFC Forest Management Services & Fees
  The Alabama Forestry Commission offers forest management service (several at no cost) to landowners. Such as: Stand Management Recommendations, Forest Management Plans, Best Management Practices (BMP), Wildlife Management Assistance, Insect & Disease Assistances, Cost-Share Programs, Firewise Assessments.

Other services include Firelane Construction (including internal and external firelanes), Wildlife Openings, and Water Diversion Construction are computed on a hourly rate. Rates for prescribed burning according to the following schedule.

AFC Stewardship Assistance
  The Land Stewardship Biologists in your area is available (at no cost) to provide on site technical assistance to evaluate wildlife habitat and provide recommendations for landowners management goals.  For additional information and assistances please contact Allen Varner.

  Information and guidelines for BMP in Alabama.  If you would like more information about Alabama's BMPs you can contact your local Forestry Commission office or the Alabama Forestry Commission's BMP Forester Jim Jeter.
 
Considerations when Selling Your Timber
  A timber harvest marks completion of many years of growth and should be carefully considered. If done properly, the landowner will profit from the sale and, equally important, the site will be protected for the next reforestation.

Emergency Forest CRP Program
 

The Emergency Forestry CRP Program helps eligible landowners and operators restore and enhance forestland damaged by 2005 hurricanes Dennis, Katrina, Ophelia, Rita and Wilma. Trees planted through EFCRP will help reduce flood effects, protect water sources, decrease soil erosion and improve wildlife habitat.
 

Forest Health Initiative
 

The EQIP Forest Health Special Initiative is designed to promote and inform private forest landowners about timber stand improvement practices that can improve growth, reduce risks of insects and diseases, and improve forest health.
 

Cost Share: Southern Pine Beetle Prevention Program
  Financial incentives are available for a limited time to help forest landowners in Alabama protect pine forests from bark beetle attacks.  In the short term, these incentives are designed to offset some of the costs of SPB prevention measures.  The long-term goal is to reduce the susceptibility of Alabama forests to future SPB outbreaks.
 
Cost-Share: NRCS, 2008 NRCS Announces Forest Health Special Initiative
  SDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State Conservationist Gary Kobylski today announced the signup for the new Alabama Forest Health Special Initiative under the Fiscal Year 2008 Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). The first batching date to rank eligible contracts is October 26, 2007.
 

Cost Share: NRCS, Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP)

  EWP was set up by Congress to respond to emergencies created by natural disasters and assists in relieving hazards to life and property from floods and the products of erosion created by natural disasters that cause a sudden impairment of a watershed. A sudden watershed impairment results from a single natural occurrence or a short-term combination of occurrences. For the watershed to be eligible for assistance, the impairment must significantly exceed that which existed before the disaster.
 
Cost Share: NRCS,Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) In Alabama
  The Wetland Reserve Program (WRP) is designed to provide technical and financial assistance to landowners interested in restoring converted cropland back into wetlands. The goal of the program is to restore wildlife habitat and improve water quality.
 
Cost Share: NRCS, Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) In Alabama
  The Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) is a voluntary program that encourages creation of high quality wildlife habitats that support wildlife populations of National, State, Tribal, and local significance. Through WHIP, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides technical and financial assistance to landowners and others to develop upland, wetland, riparian, and aquatic habitat areas on their property.

USDA Farm Service Agency's (FSA) Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary program that helps agricultural producers safeguard environmentally sensitive land. CRP participants plant long-term, resource-conserving covers to improve the quality of water, control soil erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat. In return, FSA provides participants with rental payments and cost-share assistance.
 

Cost Share: USDA, Alabama Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)
 

The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is a USDA program that provides payments to participants to address significant natural resource concerns on agricultural lands. EQIP funds are awarded to landowners/users who agree to implement conservation/environmental practices and systems through a contracting process. Practices and plans for EQIP are to treat the land to a sustainable level to address the primary national, state, and county resource concerns.
 

Cost Share: USDA, CP-31 Bottomland (hardwood) Timber Establishment on Wetlands initiative

  USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA): The Bottomland (hardwood) Timber Establishment on Wetlands initiative is a new effort under the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) that works to improve air and water quality as well as increase wildlife habitat along wetland areas. The initiative allows producers to enroll in a CRP practice on lands suitable for growing bottomland hardwood trees or adapted shrubs that will provide multipurpose forest and wildlife benefits.
 
Cost Share: USDA, P-33 Northern Bobwhite Quail Habitat Initiative
  USDA Farm Service Agency's (FSA) Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Northern Bobwhite Quail Habitat Initiative is aimed at creating 250,000 acres of habitat for the northern bobwhite quail.
 
Cost Share: USDA CP-36 Longleaf Pine Initiative
  USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) unveiled a Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Longleaf Pine Initiative designed to reforest up to 250,000 acres of longleaf pine forests in nine southern states.
 
Cost-Share: USDA, 2008 Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)
  Alabama USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is accepting applications for the fiscal year 2008 Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). The EQIP program, administered by NRCS, provides technical and financial assistance to help eligible agricultural producers address soil, water, air, and related natural resource concerns on their operations.   Eastern forests are vulnerable to stresses from insects and disease, wildland loss, invasive species, uncharacteristic fire, and climate change. As new threats emerge and old threats resurface, the Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center (EFETAC) is an interdisciplinary resource that is actively developing new technology and tools to anticipate and respond to emerging eastern forest threats.

  This site provides natural resource professionals and the public the scientific knowledge and tools they need to achieve their objectives.
 
Forest Health Protection-USDA Southern Region
  Forest Health Protection (FHP) is a unit of the USDA Forest Service that employs pest management specialists, forest entomologists and plant pathologists to provide technical assistance in the prevention, detection, evaluation and suppression of forest insect and disease pest problems.

Timber Products Output (TPO)
  TPO studies report size and composition of primary wood using industries, use of roundwood by product, by species and by geographic location.  This information provides a snapshot of where timber is being harvested and where it is transported.

Urban Forest Hurricane Recovery Program
  The University of Florida /Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) created the Urban Forest Hurricane Recovery Program after the devastation of the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons. The main goal of the program is to foster a healthy urban forest that is more wind resistant. The program is aimed at citizens and communities who seek to rebuild and set better management practices so that future storms are less devastating.
